Best beaches in Phuket: from Patong to Nai Harn
Patong is Phuket's busiest beach, Kata and Karon suit visitors who want a long beach with waves and restaurants close by, Kamala and Surin are quieter, Nai Harn and Rawai sit at the southern end, and Nai Yang is about 15 minutes from the airport.1 The right choice depends on whether you want nightlife, surf, snorkelling or calm.
Every beach description and drive time on this page comes from the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Japan office, with a few exceptions that are named. The drive times are approximate and assume normal traffic.
Phuket's west coast at a glance
Phuket is Thailand's largest island, in the Andaman Sea, about 860 km south of Bangkok. Mountains cover about 77 per cent of it, and the west coast has a string of beaches with different characters.1
Phuket Airport is in Mai Khao, Thalang, about 32 km north of Phuket Town.2 The drive times below start from either the town or the airport, and the source says which.
Patong
Patong is the busiest beach and the one most popular with visitors. By day there are marine sports, and in the evening there is shopping and nightlife along Bangla Road and Second Beach Road. Waves of 0.5 to 3 m make it popular with surfers, and the north end suits beginners.3
The tourism authority gives about 30 minutes by songthaew from Phuket Town and about 45 minutes by car from the airport.3
Kata and Kata Noi
Kata Beach is split by a small rocky point into Kata Yai in the north, with hotels, restaurants and bars, and Kata Noi in the south, where the water is clear and good for snorkelling. It has the most consistent waves on Phuket, and the surf season runs from May to October.4
The length depends on the source. The tourism authority gives about 2 km of sand,4 while Wikipedia says the beach extends 1.5 km.5 Use a range of 1.5 to 2 km.
Kata is about 30 minutes from Phuket Town, about 50 minutes from the airport, and about 20 minutes by car to Patong.4
Karon
Karon Beach is split into Karon Noi in the north, reached through hotels and also called Relax Bay, and the long straight Karon Yai in the south. It is known for squeaking sand and as a spot for sunsets.6
Karon is about 30 minutes from Phuket Town, about 50 minutes from the airport, and about 15 minutes by car to Patong.6
Kamala
Kamala is quiet and compact with a private beach feel, and international hotels have been built there in recent years. It lies about 5 km north of Patong, which is 15 to 20 minutes by car.7
Surin and Bang Tao
Surin Beach is quiet and popular with local people, and it stays uncrowded in high season. The tourism authority says the sea floor makes it unsuitable for swimming, but there is diving and snorkelling at the rocks at the north and south ends. It is about 24 km from Phuket Town, or 30 to 40 minutes by car.8
Bang Tao is named by the tourism authority as the beach with the high end resorts of Laguna Phuket.1 No further Bang Tao detail was confirmed.
Nai Yang
Nai Yang Beach is part of a marine national park, with coral reef beyond a shallow sea. Snorkelling and swimming are possible from December to February, and many local families visit at weekends. It is about 15 minutes by car from the airport.9
Nai Harn and Rawai in the south
Nai Harn has white sand and clear water, and the source describes it as a lesser known Phuket beach where yachts sometimes anchor in the bay. It is said to offer some of Thailand's finest sunsets, and it is near Promthep Cape, the southern tip.10
Rawai is on the east side of the southern end, about 2 km north east of Promthep Cape, and the sea is calm all year. The Chao Le (sea people) live in a village at the north end, and the beach is known for inexpensive seafood at local restaurants. It is about 30 minutes from Phuket Town and about 50 minutes from the airport.11
When to go: dry and green seasons
The dry season runs from November to March, the hot season from April to May and the green season from June to October. On the west coast the waves are higher in the green season, and the tourism authority advises care with marine activities.1
